Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks
Titled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was launched on Oct 27 and lays out methods to reduce the environmental effect of data centres whilst satisfying the climbing demand for digital infrastructure in Asia-Pacific (APAC).
The white paper highlights best practices to improve power efficiency across the information centre lifecycle– from location choice, design and building to operations and monitoring. It also suggests policy procedures to speed up access to clean and renewable energy with stronger grid framework and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Amongst the examples presented is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– a certification system jointly developed by the Infocomm Media Advancement Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to recognise information facilities with strong sustainability functionality and energy-efficient strategies.
The APDCA members include leading worldwide providers, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.

Driven by cloud fostering, digital companies and artificial intelligence (AI), regional demand for data centres is forecasted to grow nearly 20% each year through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that Southeast Asia’s information centre electricity use will almost double by 2030 compared to 2024– a pattern mirrored across the broader APAC area.
Developers are motivated to collaborate carefully with regulators and sector associates to establish consistent power performance criteria throughout the APAC markets.
